No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) to include 21st-Century Skills

Chairman of the House education committee, Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., says he hopes to renew the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) through the House with a proposal to provide incentives for states and schools to develop standards that reflect 21st-century skills.

Miller wants to set new state standards and include multiple measures of student success and assessments. "These measures can no longer reflect just basic skills and memorization. Rather, they must reflect critical-thinking skills and the ability to apply knowledge to new and challenging contexts. These are the skills that today's students will need to meet the complex demands of the American economy and society in a globalized world."
