Autodesk Official Software Sponsor of AIA 150

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced that Autodesk is the official software sponsor of AIA150, the 150th celebration of the AIA's 1857 founding.

The theme of AIA150 is “Celebrating the Past, Designing the Future.” Over the next five years as the official software sponsor of AIA150, the AIA will look to Autodesk to guide its membership in the changing world of design technology.

The Autodesk sponsorship features two layers of AIA150 projects on Google Earth:

  • America's Favorite Architecture
  • Blueprint for America.

These layers provide 3D images of iconic structures and community initiatives that bring architecture to life for the public through virtual technology.  For more information on other AIA150 news and events, including Blueprint for America, visit www.aia150.org

e-SPECS® supports BIM integration for all Autodesk Revit®- based 2008 BIM products

InterSpec announced that e-SPECS building information modeling (BIM) has enhanced integration for all Autodesk Revit-based 2008 BIM products including Revit® Architecture, Revit® MEP and Revit® Structure.

e-SPECS enables coordination, collaboration and data management that can integrate directly with AutoCAD®, AutoCAD® MEP, AutoCAD® Architecture, and Revit- based BIM products.

  Tip: 64-bit Workaround
(Applies to: AutoCAD® Architecture and AutoCAD® MEP.)

If you need to install AutoCAD® Architecture 2008 or AutoCAD® MEP 2008 on 64-bit operating systems, you can request the necessary files. Subscription customers can request files by submitting a service request through the Subscription Center; all other customers need to contact IMAGINiT Technologies.

The workaround allows the 32-bit versions of AutoCAD® Architecture or AutoCAD® MEP to be only installed on 64-bit systems. After that, Autodesk will not provide support in the event of crashes, drawing corruption, or other abnormal behavior.

Autodesk continues to work on true 64-bit versions of the applications.

BIMWORLD Spins Out Free Manufacturer's Content for Revit

IMAGINiT's Architectural Blogger, Daniel Hughes, shares his insights on Autodesk architectural software including Revit® Architecture and AutoCAD® Architecture. In this month's newsletter, Daniel shares an excerpt from his blog:

The BIMWorld/ BIMLibrary websites were unveiled at the 2006 AIA National Convention. Since then, their homepage indicates their free library of manufacturers' BIM & CAD objects now exceeds 19,000 components. Manufacturers are including product texture maps, material libraries, specifications, photos, website links and product brochures to aid your research of their products.

For your convenience, I posted our clients' favorite free Revit content websites in the April 2007 blog post; including BIMWorld. Cheers!

Why Use Design Visualization?

IMAGINiT's Media & Entertainment Blogger, Mark Gerhard shares his thoughts about the entertainment and design visualization industry. This month, Mark explores the benefits of design visualization:

There are three distinct areas where Design Visualization has broad appeal.

  1. Mental Exploration: You have an idea for a design, and you draw pictures of that idea in your mind's eye. Imagination deploys visual images, movies you experience as if they were real. (Remind me again, what's the dif? Real vs. As If?) Imagination paves the highway for the idea to drive to reality. 3ds Max is the train, the car, the cart - all aboard!
  2. Design Verification: Using Design Visualization, you can see if what you think you are designing is actually what you are designing. What will it look like and how will it work?
  3. Design Presentation: You can animate key elements of your idea to tell the story or add realism. You can also add animated pedestrians and traffic to architectural visualization, show the passage of daylight and the movement of the shadows, or use it to show anything that changes over time.
