Tip: Enabling
3GB for Civil 3D
(Applies to Civil 3D 2008)
Windows normally limits physical memory to 2GB, reserving
any additional memory for itself. If your computer has more
than 3GB RAM, then it is possible to increase
the amount of memory available to Civil 3D to 3GB, which,
Autodesk has found, results in some improvement in performance
when working with larger datasets.
To enable 3GB in
Vista, follow these steps:
- Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
- On the command line, enter "bsdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa"
- Restart the computer.
To enable 3GB of RAM in Windows XP click here.

Why Use Design Visualization?
IMAGINiT's Media & Entertainment Blogger, Mark Gerhard shares his insight into the entertainment and design visualization industry. This month, Mark explores the benefits of design visualization:
There are three distinct areas where Design Visualization has broad appeal.
- Mental Exploration: You have an idea for a design, and you draw pictures of that idea in your mind's eye. Imagination deploys visual images, movies you experience as if they were real. (Remind me again, what's the dif? Real vs. As If?) Imagination paves the highway for the idea to drive to reality. 3ds Max is the train, the car, the cart - all aboard!
- Design Verification: Using Design Visualization, you can see if what you think you are designing is actually what you are designing. What will it look like and how will it work?
- Design Presentation: You can animate key elements of your idea to tell the story or add realism. You can also add animated pedestrians and traffic to architectural visualization, show the passage of daylight and the movement of the shadows, or use it to show anything that changes over time.
