Autodesk Acquires NavisWorks, Opticore for 3D Navigation

Autodesk recently signed agreements to acquire NavisWorks of England and Opticore of Sweden.

NavisWorks' software is used for 3D coordination, collaboration, and sequencing in design. The company has customers among the construction, building, plant, and marine industries. Autodesk paid $25 million USD for the privately-held company.

Software from Opticore is used for 3D visualizations and presentations. The company's customers include large automobile manufacturers, such as Ford, Hyundai, and Nissan, as well as consumer product companies.

You can expect to see these software technologies in future offerings from Autodesk.

One Millionth User of Autodesk 3D Design Software

Autodesk considers its model-based 3D design software to consist of Inventor, Revit, Civil 3D. In adding up all licenses of the three, the company found that it had recently sold its one millionth license to Gulf Stream Coach.

The company is a leader in RV manufacturing, and they find they need to quickly respond to customer needs as the market changes. Gulf Stream’s creation of digital prototypes of its products is reducing the need to produce costly physical prototypes. This speaks to the value of digital prototyping as a competitive advantage, increasing manufacturing operations efficiency and enhanced quality and innovation.

The company purchased the one millionth seat of Inventor among a dozen existing seats.

Tip: Vista Problems with Inventor 2008
(Applies to: Autodesk® Inventor™ 2008)

The known issues involved with using Inventor 2008 on Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating are listed below.
  • OpenGL hardware acceleration is not supported; use DirectX instead.
  • Some codecs cannot be used when generating AVI files.
  • The Add-in Manager may not function if you change the status of add-ins. You must turn off the User Access Control, and then log on as Administrator. You cannot select "Change" in Uninstall or change a program while the UAC is on. Inventor cannot be uninstalled if the UAC is on.
  • CAD Manager Tools cannot be used immediately after they have been installed. You must first install the Autodesk CAD application.
  • The DWG file icons used for template files are not displayed correctly for non-Administrator users.
  • The files located in the Program Files folder can be edited using folder virtualization, but any changes you make to these files cannot be seen by other user accounts.

For details on additional problems involving assemblies, cable and harnesses, DWG TrueConnect, Inventor Studio, multi-sheet plot, stress analysis, task scheduler, and interoperability, go to support.autodesk.com.

  Feature: Hopewell Designs

Hopewell Designs provides systems irradiation applications, X-ray inspection, positioning equipment, and radiation shielding. The company selected Autodesk's Inventor as its primary software for engineering. The company had evaluated competing 3D CAD software products, and then decided on Inventor for its foundation for digital prototyping.

Because Hopewell Designs offers customized systems to customers, it standardized on Inventor, ensuring that data can be quickly repurposed -- by keeping standard parts and assemblies readily available and easily reusable. Hopewell plans to make use of Inventor's ability to simulate and perform finite element analysis.

"One of the primary reasons we chose Inventor over the competition is because it includes AutoCAD Mechanical software for 2D drawing and detailing as well as DWG TrueConnect for direct reading and writing of DWG files – delivering the enhanced productivity of 3D while preserving access to existing AutoCAD expertise and designs," said Dave Schettler, project manager at Hopewell Designs.
