AutoCAD Civil 3D, LIDAR, DEM & GEOTIFF
IMAGINiT Applications Specialist, Doug Benoit, shares his insight and tips on Autodesk civil engineering software .
Are you using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data to create a surface? And do you need to create a DEM or GEOTIFF from the surface for use in a GIS application? All of these abilities are available within AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008.
LIDAR data comes as a .xyz file (point format ENZ - Easting, Northing, and Elevation) that can be imported directly into Civil 3D. The one drawback with LIDAR files is the number of points contained within the file, that is unless you turn off the display of the markers and labels for all that point data. Another option would be to generate a surface by adding a point file. Oh and don't forget to assign the project's coordinate zone in the Drawing Settings.
Once the surface has been built, the steps to create a DEM and/or GEOTIFF file are simple.
- In the Civil 3D TOOLSPACE, go to the Prospector tab and expand the Surfaces branch.
- Right-click on the preferred surface and select Export to DEM.
- In the Export surface to DEM dialogue box, establish the DEM file name and verify all remaining data, especially the coordinate zones.
- Click OK.
That's it! You can now go through the simple steps to add DEM and/or GEOTIFF files to your Map/MapGuide GIS project.

Autodesk 3ds Max 2008 Announced
IMAGINiT's Media & Entertainment Blogger, Mark Gerhard, shares his thoughts about the entertainment and design visualization industry. This month, Mark shares with us an excerpt from his blog:
Autodesk unveiled the next release of Autodesk® 3ds Max at the annual SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles this past August. You can expect some serious productivity improvements coming out of this release.
For a long, long time, Max has suffered in comparison with other products when it came to working with large datasets. Well, they've taken this to heart and worked hard on improving all aspects of working with files that have huge numbers of objects.
There are other additional functions and tools including the Scene Explorer, which combines the power of Schematic View with the functionality from the Select by Name dialog and the tool set Review, which has the ability to see shadows in the viewport.
