Blog: Assembly Library in Civil 3D 2009
IMAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:
AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 comes to us with the ability to create a library of typical assemblies that can be added to a Tool Palette for easy access.
Once you've created the assembly according to your design, simply left click on the vertical line of the assembly marker to select or highlight it. Once selected, click on it again and drag it onto a Tool Palette and save the drawing. After that, all you have to do is drag-and-drop it from the palette into a new drawing and apply it to your corridor model.
You can read the remainder of Doug's tutorial at Assembly Library In Civil 3D 2009

Green Roofs
The 42 biologists, ecologists, designers, builders, and landscapers at Rana Creek Restoration Ecology are dedicated to restoring butterflies and healthy ecosystems to the landscape.
With the economic and environmental benefits of green roofs now established and catching on nationwide, a new apartment building in San Jose, California, will absorb 100 percent of the rainwater that falls onsite with the help of a living roof, living walls, a bioswale, and retention basin.
The six-and-a-half acre Vancouver Convention Center roof will capture, store, and treat its rainwater for use in irrigation and flushing toilets, for a gain of 3 million gallons a year. And Rana Creek is working with the city of San Francisco to devise an effective zero-discharge strategy that would manage rainwater where it falls rather than sending it to old and overtaxed storm water sewer lines.
Rana Creek relies on Autodesk's Civil 3D for roof storm water runoff calculations, as well as designing water and sewer systems. When a project requires significant grading and drainage, the software makes it easy to manage the cut and fill (where excess soil is used on site as much as possible, to avoid the high energy costs associated with transporting dirt).

Introducing AutoCAD Civil 2009
Due to the decreasing demand for Land Desktop software, both it and Civil 3D-Land Desktop Companion 2009 software will be the final releases.
It will remain available for purchase until spring 2009. As of July 8, 2008, subscriptions will no longer be available for purchase; you will continue to receive subscription benefits through the end of your subscription contract.
In part as a replacement, Autodesk has introduced AutoCAD Civil 2009. AutoCAD Civil software provides civil engineering technicians, drafters, and surveyors with the tools they need to create coordinated, reliable design information and deliver higher-quality construction documentation for transportation, land development, and environmental projects.
Part of Autodesk's leading civil engineering solution, AutoCAD Civil streamlines the capabilities found in the more comprehensive AutoCAD® Civil 3D® by providing a focused design and construction documentation solution.
AutoCAD Civil works seamlessly with AutoCAD Civil 3D, sharing the same model-centric technology, so as design changes are made, drafting and construction documentation update automatically boosting productivity and reducing errors and omissions.

Tip: Fatal Error from Opening Drawings
(Applies to Civil 3D 2009 and Land Desktop 2009)
When you opened a drawing using Civil 3D 2009 or Land Desktop 2009, you received a fatal error similar to one of the following messages:
FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0000 Exception at 1caa3d46h
FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0000 Exception at 1d4f3d46h
This problem is caused by the order in which the files were loaded. You must load AeccLand.dbx before opening the drawing file. After you start the application, follow these steps:
1. At the command prompt, enter Appload.
2. In the C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 folder, select AeccLand.dbx, and then press the Load button.
3. On the command line you should see a message stating that AeccLand.dbx was successfully loaded.
4. Click Close.
You should now be able to open the drawing file.

Certified
Hardware Database Updated
Autodesk regularly tests graphics boards to ensure they do an excellent
job of displaying your 3D models. The database of supported
graphics boards has been updated. You may need to check
it out if:
- Your computer has new graphics hardware.
- A new driver is available for the graphics
board.
- The status of the graphics card has changed,
such as from Supported to Certified.
- Autodesk or the graphics hardware vendor has
resolved issues with the graphics hardware.
The current version of the Hardware Certification
Database is 17.2.0.3. If your copy of the database
is older, then you should download the update.
