  Blog: Revit MEP Videos

IMAGINiT's Architectural Blogger, Daniel Hughes, shares his insight on Autodesk architectural software including Revit Architecture and AutoCAD Architecture. In this month's newsletter, Daniel shares an excerpt from his blog:

Autodesk, MEP Blogger Kyle Bernhardt provides a collection of Revit MEP 2009 New Features Video Blogs. Here's a sampling of video blogs he's been posting. So grab the popcorn and enjoy the show!

Zoning it Up ...the next logical step...creation of Zones. Those of you familiar with Groups, MEP Systems, or MEP Circuits will feel right at home with the user interaction that's been implemented around Zones.

Blog: New UI in 3ds Max

IMAGINiT's Media & Entertainment Blogger, Mark Gerhard shares his thoughts about the entertainment and design visualization industry. This month, Mark explores the benefits of design visualization:

In 3ds Max Design 2009, experienced users will see a couple of new UI elements prominently displayed in the viewport. These are the SteeringWheel and ViewCube, which are viewport navigation tools that were added as an attempt to make viewport navigation easier for people who are new to 3ds Max.

For the experienced user who already has no problem navigating the viewport, they are generally an annoyance. Hitting the ESC key hides the Steeringwheel, but the Viewcube is a little more work. On Views menu go to ViewCube > Properties, then in the Display Options group turn off Show the ViewCube.

For large scenes, it turns out this new feature can impact viewport performance and so I recommend that you remove this functionality completely. You can do this by renaming the file AutoCamMax.gup to AutoCamMax.gup.bak. Close 3ds Max first, and then find the root installation..

  Green Building Design: HIP Architects

HIP Architects is a 25-person design firm based in Edmonton, Alberta that specializes in structures for the inhospitable climate of northern Canada. With a growing number of clients interested in environmentally sensitive buildings, HIP has recently turned to Autodesk's Revit Building to facilitate the complex processes required to support sustainable design and “green” certification.

Among HIP's current Revit Building projects is the design of a new hostel in Jasper National Park for Hostelling International Canada. The 3-story 18,000 sq. ft. building, which incorporates innovative sustainable features such as a green roof, is being designed to the gold standard of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System® - accepted as the North American standard for sustainable design, now adopted by the Canadian Green Building Council.

“We investigated a wide variety of designs and their impact on energy requirements - all within the same building information model,” remarked Partridge. “Then we ran a baseline energy analysis, confirming that the design exceeded our energy goal by performing 50% better than a conventional building.”

HIP also added a myriad of data to the building information model to assist in their downstream LEED certification efforts - data such as recycled material content, renewable material, etc. “We were able to filter and sort on material quantities automatically, bypassing the manual extraction/calculation process required for LEED certification,” said Allan Partridge, principal.

  Tip: Out of Memory Error
(Applies to: Revit 2009)

When you upgraded large files from previous versions of Revit, it generated an "Out of Memory" error message.

The solution is to (1) enable the 3GB switch in Windows, and (2) make the following changes in the older version of Revit:

1. Open the file with the Audit option selected.
2. On the File menu, click Purge Unused.
3. In the Purge Unused dialog box, select All to remove all unused objects and families from the file.
4. In the Manage Links dialog box, unload all RVT links.
5. Close all views but one.
6. Save the file to a new location or re-save it with the Compaction check box selected.

Then, in Revit Architecture 2009, place the file in a shared network location. You should then try to open the file from this location.
