  Map 3D is Citrix-Ready

Autodesk has joined the Citrix Alliance Program, and completed verification testing of AutoCAD Map 3D 2009 software with Citrix XenApp.

This allows large sites to virtually deploy Map 3D. The advantage to customers is increased security, reduced hardware costs and a return on investment of up to 30%.

  Blog: Enabling LDT's Status Bar

IMAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:

The status bar in Land Desktop 2008 gives you the ability to drape raster images and mapping objects over a DEM file. (A DEM file is a surface file that AutoCAD Map uses to view raster files and map objects in 3D.) This bar also contains the View Scale which gives you what Zoom Scale you are at.

Out-of-the-box Land does not have the AutoCAD Map Status Bar Enabled. The way to enable this Status Bar:

1. Exit Autodesk Map 3D.
2. Open the Windows Registry Editor.

(Note: Only edit the registry if you are willing to accept the consequences!)

3. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Autodesk\AutoCAD\R17.1\ACAD-6008:409\Applications\ AcMap for Land Desktop 2008.

(Note: ...\ACAD-6018:409\Applications\AcMap is for Land Enabled Map 2008.)

4. Double click on Statusbar on the right and change the value from 0 to 1.
5. Exit the Windows Registry Editor and launch Land Enabled Map.

You can read the remainder of Doug's tutorial at Enabling the AutoCAD Map drawing status bar in AutoCAD Land

  Green Mapping in Switzerland

Fribourg, Switzerland, is a bilingual university town with almost a third of its area is covered by forests, parks, playgrounds, and lawns. The city is responsible for maintaining 20 percent of those green areas.

Fribourg is one of  a dozen Swiss and German cities now use custom software and services from Autodesk Consulting Services to help them manage their park assets. Called Parcs et Promenades (“Parks and Walks”) and Baum Grün Kataster (“Green Tree Register”), the software helps park workers track and take care of a city's trees, plants, playgrounds, and field equipment.

Parcs  lets city workers easily build and manage inventories, plan maintenance schedules, and check the impact of requested construction permits.  The registry information can be used flexibly — plotted on a map using Autodesk's Map 3D and MapGuide as a graphical front-end.

The city will soon add the detailed park data to its Website, where aerial maps already offer  information about city streets, attractions, tax districts and the like. Giving residents more insight into how their local parks are managed may increase their awareness about the challenges of keeping parklands well-maintained and maybe even remind them of the many benefits provided by their favorite green spaces.

  Tip: Controlling Drawing Tips
(Applies to Civil 3D 2008/9)

When you position the cursor over an alignment, profile, or section view, a line is drawn in the corresponding horizontal alignment or profile view. This line is a drawing tip. It helps you visualize  the cursor position in plan, profile, and section views.

Cursor located above a horizontal alignment: a temporary line is drawn in each profile view at the station defined by the orthogonal projection of the cursor onto the horizontal alignment.

Cursor is located in a profile view: a temporary line is drawn orthogonal to the horizontal alignment at the cursor’s station.

Cursor is located in a cross-section view: a temporary line is drawn orthogonal to the horizontal alignment at the station of the cross-section view.

You control the drawing tips with the following commands:

  • HideDrawingTips - turns drawing tips off completely.
  • ShowDrawingTips - turns drawing tips on for the current viewport only.
  • ShowDrawingTipsFull - turns drawing tips on for all viewports.
