Higher Education, or Hire Education?
Questioning the Purpose and Value of College for All Students
Every once in a while, a contrarian appears and challenges some of our basic assumptions about schooling in today's society. One of the biggest assumptions we have is that it is the job of school to prepare all our students for college. The jobs of the future require a four-year degree, at least. Students who do not go to college will be unable to find decent paying jobs and will be unable to support their families.
But I have wondered about this assumption for years. The majority of Americans still do not have college diplomas, yet they seem to manage to survive. Furthermore, it is unclear to me where all the highly paid jobs are going to come from if, all of a sudden, everyone earns a college degree. Everything I've read says that it is the service sector of the economy that is growing the fastest, and most of those jobs require little or no college education.

I learned a really cool trick from Brandon Davis while attending his
masterclass at Siggraph.
Brandon is an old friend who has done film effects and commercial work with 3ds Max and Houdini for years.
His credits include the movies Armegeddon and Day After Tomorrow, I think he still works at Digital Domain.
His class was on making water, primarily ocean water. His trick was a method to automatically remove everything not in the camera's view. Here's how"

College campuses are going green
Sustainability seen as key for next generation
Pineapple heads, watermelon rinds and lettuce leaves fertilize the flowers at
Seattle University instead of going into the garbage.
Staff members at the University of Washington drive hybrid cars and may soon be able to fill up other motor pool vehicles with biodiesel.
These and other efforts on Washington campuses underscore the movement to turn the unofficial colors of each college to an Earth-friendly green. Local universities are reducing the garbage and pollution they produce while cutting back on the amount of energy they use.
Going green has meant changes in the way colleges maintain their grounds, construct their buildings, perform their research and even teach their courses.

Energy Star: An Art Teacher Runs a Tight, Environmentally Friendly Ship
A classroom dedicated to energy conservation runs on ethics, hard work, dreams, and a kid-powered bicycle. Sharon Campbell remembers sleeping out under the stars and watching Sputnik go overhead. Back then, she wanted to be the first astronaut. Instead, she became an educator. She has been teaching art now for twenty-one years at Redwood Middle School, in Napa, California, but she visits space on a regular basis, via a very special classroom.
It began when Campbell won a grant from British Petroleum and went to Los Angeles for a workshop on energy conservation. She visited Southern California Edison, where she watched incoming energy switch throughout the state.
"It was during the heat wave, and I sat and watched California run out of electricity," she recalls. It was there she learned that power is a finite resource, and that if every homeowner installed just one energy-efficient lightbulb, it would be enough to avoid a blackout for an entire year. "And that’s when the big bulb went off," she says.

Autodesk Launches Autodesk Animation Academy 2009
At SIGGRAPH® 2008, Autodesk announced Autodesk Animation Academy 2009, the latest version of its curriculum-based offering for the secondary school market. This new release will include four software packages: Autodesk® Maya® 2009, Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2009, Autodesk® MotionBuilder® 2009, and Autodesk® Mudbox™ 2009 software.
