Success Story: 'Build Something' Winners
Students from five countries captured awards for innovation and sustainability from Autodesk.
In the Civil Engineering category, winner Antonio Lorio of Italy used Civil 3D to create a 3D digital prototype of an infrastructure containing road intersections and roundabouts that would preserve existing archaeological excavations.
Runner-up Eugeny Malenkikh of Russia used Civil 3D to design of a complex road junction in the city of Ivanovo.
Winners were selected by a panel of industry experts. The judges share Autodesk's vision of using design as a way to create a better, more sustainable world, and encouraging more students to pursue careers in design and engineering.
Autodesk supports schools and institutions of higher learning worldwide through substantial discounts, subscriptions, grant programs, training, curricula development and community resources.

Blog: Joining Different Pipe Networks
IMAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:
Once again, Malcolm Fernandes hailing from IMAGINiT's Calgary, Alberta office comes across another nice little discovery that he would like to share:
This is standard in a land development project, a complex network of roads that will spawn a complex network of pipes. So how have you been creating the pipe network? If you follow the party line then, you have been using the network Layout tools.
The alternative is creating networks from objects (plines). So off you go, merrily creating plines of your pipe network based on predetermined line assignments, offsets from property lines, or road right of way.
However, creating a network from objects will create separate networks, and the down side is you cannot connect pipes from different network… or can you?
You can read the remainder of Doug's tutorial at Joining Different Pipe Networks.

Autodesk's First Digital City
Autodesk is working with the city of Salzburg, Austria as the first pilot city in Autodesk's new Digital Cities initiative.
The Digital City initiative provides a collaborative environment for visualizing, analyzing, and simulating the future impact of urban design and development at a city-wide scale. This combination of city data with realistic visualization and simulation tools allows Salzburg to view and interact with the city landscape, as well as analyze the impact of future urban planning, tourism and economic development projects before they are built.
"The digital city model will help cities like ours better understand the impact of proposed urban projects," said Dr. Heinz Schaden, mayor of the City of Salzburg. "This type of pilot program will help us better understand how we can create an attractive and sustainable future for Salzburg and its people."
