Success Story: World's Largest Double-Arch Dam

The Chengdu Hydroelectric Investigation and Design Institute  provides hydropower related engineering services to the State Power Corporation of China. CHIDI’s staff includes more than 1,300 engineering and design professionals. To enhance its ability to design large hydropower plants, CHIDI  turned to Autodesk and its Civil 3D software.

Using Autodesk Civil 3D, CHIDI is designing the world’s largest double-arched dam as a part of a $2 billion hydropower project. The firm uses the software to automate the process of generating profiles across varied terrains, improve the precision of excavation planning -- all the while completing designs faster and more efficiently.

"Every hydropower project must be based on the geography of the site," says Xue Lijun, a senior engineer with CHIDI. "The site information must be highly precise, especially on projects involving excavation work at the slopes and embankment. Because of this, applications must be capable of very accurate 3D models to be useful in our design processes."

Blog: AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 - Installer Errors

IMAGINiT's Geospatial Blogger, Warren Medernach, shares his insight on geospatial solutions and is highly skilled in developing techniques for bridging the CAD / GIS gap. In this month's newsletter, Warren shares an excerpt of his blog:

I've recently encountered some problems with my installation of Map 2010.  After installing Map I noticed that whenever I tried to enable macros in my Outlook, the Map 3D installer would fire up.  If I hit 'Cancel' a couple of times, the dialog would disappear, and the macros were loaded in Outlook.  We've also been receiving inquiries from clients that are experiencing the exact same problems when they launch their ArcGIS and other software applications.

So, what is causing the installer to fire up?

It turns out the problem seems to be that the AutoCAD Map installation has not fully completed, and this can actually be seen in the Windows Event Viewer.  In the Event Viewer you will see some MsiInstaller warnings

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Geospatial Coordinate Systems Temp\Australia\Agd66\A66National(13.09.01).gsb' does not exist

We are working with Autodesk on this issue, but as of yet, we have not resolved this issue, so stay tuned for an update and a resolution.

To find out what Warren's will be sharing next visit his blog at:  www.rand.com/imaginit/geospatialblog

Tip: Workspace Corrupts Installation

(Applies to: Civil 3D 2010 )

Civil 3D may become unresponsive when you run "AutoCAD Civil 3D As AutoCAD 2010," and you load the Civil 3D CUIX file and then switch to the Civil 3D workspace.

Repairing Civil 3D should resolve the issue.

  1. Click Start menu (Windows) > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select Autodesk Civil 3D 2010 from the list, and click Change.
  4. Click the Reinstall or Repair Autodesk Civil 3D 2010 option, and then click Next.
  5. Click the Repair Errors in my Autodesk Civil 3D 2010 Installation option, and then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions to complete the repair.

Once the repair is complete, restart your software and confirm that the issue has been resolved. You may be prompted for the installation disk during the repair, so be sure to have it available.

If this does not resolve your issue, you will need to perform a clean installation.

Green Design: Reverting Concrete Channels to Natural Streams

Miles of waterways have been tamed into concrete channels to control floods, irrigate dry land, and generate electricity. Despite the benefits this engineering delivers, concrete waterways aren’t always the perfect answer, because they lack the vegetation found in natural ecosystems.

Stream scientist Mitch Swanson relies on biologists, hydrologists, and ecologists to help him assess and predict what nature needs on a remediation project. He enlists the talents of civil engineers to run the calculations and figure out how to build new land forms good enough to entice steelhead trout and salmon back to a stream.

The firm starts by making land surveys and topographic maps with Autodesk's Land Desktop to inform its conceptual design, then uses AutoCAD to develop a 3D plan for the grading, irrigation, and revegetation necessary to restore habitat.

Once a design is final, engineers use Civil 3D to create the detailed construction plans.
