Success Story: Korean U-city

Autodesk is working with the Incheon Free Economic Zone to create Asia's first Digital City in Incheon, Korea. The Digital City is a detailed 3D city model that allows the public, city government, construction, and business communities to visualize, analyze, and simulate real-world city scenarios.

This pilot program brings together 3D models of above- and below-ground features to integrate geospatial, civil engineering, and infrastructure data with CAD and BIM. The partnership is exploring the full potential of U-GIS (ubiquitous GIS), as well as promoting Incheon City as a leading 'u-city' -- a city of ubiquitous information technology. Scheduled to open in August 2009, the first stage is "T-City," a six-story, mini u-city urban development project with the total plot area of 31,697 square miles.

Kim Dong-Kee, president of IUDC said, "As 3D modeling technology will be implemented from planning to construction phase, the Digital City project makes it not only possible to save costs but also to develop high-quality city development."

Blog: Civil 3D Section Labels Tutorial

IMAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:

That's right folks. I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more Section Labels!

This is the first of a 3 Part Series that explores the wonderful world of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 section labels. Did you know that there are three (that I know of), count them… 1… 2… 3 ways to apply, automatically, section labels to your cross section views? I know it's hard to believe, but it is true.

The first set of labels that I am going to explore, are those sections labels inserted via a Section Label Set…

You can read the remainder of Doug's tutorial at Civil 3D 2009 Section labels Part 1.

Blog: The commute was the worst part

IMAGINiT's Manufacturing Solutions Blogger, Mark Flayler, shares his insight on Autodesk's manufacturing software including Inventor, Mechanical Desktop and Mechanical. In this month's newsletter, Mark shares an excerpt of his blog:

Come visit Radu in his new remote office! Recently one of our Manufacturing Application Engineers (Radu Stancescu from our Florida office) completed a task that not many have. Radu scaled Aconcagua: (7000 meters/23000 feet) the highest mountain in the Americas, in the southern and western hemispheres, and the second highest of the world's seven continental summits located in Andes mountain range, in the Argentine province of Mendoza.

While he was there he opened the newest branch in our global offices!

  Tip: Starting Google Earth
(Applies to Civil 3D 2009 )

When attempting to import from Google Earth on the Windows Vista operating system, you received the following message:

Google Earth does not appear to be started.

On the Vista operating system, you must start Civil 3D as an Administrator in order to use the Google Earth import commands.  (If you do not, you will receive a message that incorrectly states that Google Earth is not started, even if it is.)

To use the Google Earth import commands on Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 program icon.
  2. Click Run As.
  3. In the Run As dialog box, select The Following User option, and select Administrator.
  4. Enter the Administrator password and click OK.
  5. Start Google Earth.

You can now use the Google Earth commands by clicking File  > Import in AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Green Design: 3D Geo

Last August, Autodesk bought 3D Geo of Germany, and now its software is known as Autodesk LandXplorer. It lets you create, use, and distribute virtual 3D city models, landscapes models, and geovirtual environments.

The software includes a geodata content management system that allows you to interactively compose, arrange, edit, and design 3D geoinformation. It can be applied to green space management , landscape planning, disaster management , and cadastral administration.

Optimized rendering techniques enable LandXplorer Studio Professional to handle very large geodata sets for the visualization of digital terrain models and terrain textures -- in fact, terrabytes of data.
