Blog: Sheet Metal Extents

IMAGINiT's Manufacturing Solutions Blogger, Caleb Funk, shares his insight on Autodesk's manufacturing software including Inventor, Mechanical Desktop and Mechanical. In this month's newsletter, Caleb shares an excerpt of his blog:

One documentation challenge in recent Inventor releases has been the availability to obtain sheet metal extents for length and width in parts lists or bills of material. This is a beneficial process for some users who need the values shown here -- whether it is company convention, ease of accessibility, or for purchasing requirements.

I must have answered this question once every other month over the last year and a half. The truth of the matter is that currently there are a couple ways to do it, but only one actually uses information directly from the programming; the other use a series of tricks of reference dimensions and parameters.

Here is the best method without need for custom programming, add-ins, or dimension and parameter tomfoolery:

Blog: The commute was the worst part

IMAGINiT's Manufacturing Solutions Blogger, Mark Flayler, shares his insight on Autodesk's manufacturing software including Inventor, Mechanical Desktop and Mechanical. In this month's newsletter, Mark shares an excerpt of his blog:

Come visit Radu in his new remote office! Recently one of our Manufacturing Application Engineers (Radu Stancescu from our Florida office) completed a task that not many have. Radu scaled Aconcagua: (7000 meters/23000 feet) the highest mountain in the Americas, in the southern and western hemispheres, and the second highest of the world's seven continental summits located in Andes mountain range, in the Argentine province of Mendoza.

While he was there he opened the newest branch in our global offices!

Tip: Multicore CPUs for Inventor

(Applies to : Inventor 2009)

Inventor 2009 and later versions support multi-core technology in some very specific areas of the product, including:

  • Animations and renderings in Studio.
  • Stress analysis with ANSYS or FEAComputeServer.
  • ASM kernel.
  • Task scheduler.

To fully benefit from multi-core processors, you need to use multi-threaded software, but Inventor is currently single-threaded.

On a dual-core computer, a CPU-intensive operation that uses 100% of the resources of a single-core processor will only use a maximum of 50% of the CPU for that same operation on a dual-core computer, and only 1/16th of each CPU on a 16-core computer.

Due to the lack of multi-threading, Inventor is not capable of using more than 50% of the CPU on a dual-core computer, so there is no significant performance gain over a single CPU computer.

Starting with Inventor 2009, however, you can use multiple processes in Task Scheduler by clicking Settings > Multiple processes.

The number of processes you can use is not limited to the number of processors available. If desired, you can increase the number of processes until 100% CPU activity is achieved on all of the processors.

Green Design: World's First Biomimicry Database

AskNature.org is the world's first biomimicry database, and Autodesk is a sponsor. Biomimicry studies nature's models and then imitates or takes inspiration from these designs to solve human problems.

The site features biology-inspired design strategies. Designers and engineers can access this online public-domain library free, filled with some of nature's best strategies, organized by function, and explained with illustrations and in language relevant to designers.

For instance, in trying to solve the challenge of how to glue to surfaces in moist environments, you would find information about barnacles, geckos and other organisms that have use glues in their ecosystem.

AskNature.org is a project of the Biomimicry Institute, founded by author Janine Benyus. The site is part manifesto, part search engine, and part social network.
