Success Story: Algorithmic Design
Cannon Design uses building Information modeling (BIM) and the entire line of Autodesk's Revit software for its projects, from the Ordos Music Hall in China to the Buffalo State College Science Building in Buffalo, USA.
"Since our adoption of BIM back in 2007, when we started using Revit Architecture, MEP and Structure, we've applied BIM to more than 150 projects," reports Kenneth Wiseman, president of Cannon Design's professional services. In addition to Revit, Cannon Design uses AutoCAD, Ecotect Analysis, Navisworks, 3ds Max Design, and Showcase software.
For instance, the 160,000-square-foot Ordos Music Hall was designed by Cannon's Yazdani Studio and combined the talents of architects, designers, 3D artists, engineers, and technical specialists. A Revit model was used to design a unique resilient outer skin for the structure comprised of patterned and perforated tiles. Using an algorithmic formula based on the building's geographic location and orientation to the sun, Cannon Design performed reflected light studies to help evaluate design alternatives and determine the optimal size and orientation of the individual exterior panels.
With projects in 25 countries, Cannon Design employee's a staff of 850 located in 17 offices in Canada, the USA, Shanghai, and Mumbai, India. www.cannondesign.com.

Blog: Personalized Handlettering Font in Revit
IMAGINiT's Architectural Blogger, Daniel Hughes, shares his insight on Autodesk architectural software including Revit Architecture and AutoCAD Architecture. In this month's newsletter, Daniel shares an excerpt from his blog:
Revit users are always looking for presentation or unique handlettering fonts for a variety of tasks. YourFonts.com is an online font generator that allows you to create your own Open Type fonts within a couple of minutes.
Revit uses Windows fonts for its annotation objects, such as dimensions, tags, text, and schedules. For additional sources of free or low-cost fonts:

Blog: Free Trees for 3ds Max Design 2010
IMAGINiT's Visualization, Mark Gerhard, shares his insight on Autodesk's visualization software including 3ds max, Maya, and Alias. In this month's newsletter, Mark shares an excerpt of his blog:
Got a need for trees? Greenworks Organic Software has 100 free trees on the Autodesk Seek website. These trees are botanically correct, and come in a variety of formats -- you can use them in 3ds Max Design 2010, 3ds Max 2010 and Maya 2009.
Each tree is a separate download, so it can take a little time to get them, and make sure you have plenty of disk space, I downloaded the breadfruit tree; it's 26 MB zipped and 75MB unzipped. I got 3 breadfruit trees in the download, they represent 3 different ages (young, medium and mature). These are handy if you have to show the planning department what the vegetation is going to look like when the project is completed and what it will look like when the trees reach their maximum height.

Green Design: Autodesk Simplifies Energy-Efficient Design
Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010 provides you with simulation and analysis functions for better understanding how environmental factors affect the building you're designing. The factors include solar, thermal, shading, lighting and airflow. Design data is imported into Ecotect Analysis from Revit 2010 through the gbXML file format.
Subscribers also have access Autodesk's Green Building Studio Web site for whole-building energy analysis to determine the total energy costs based on local electric grid data. The site also calculates solar availability, heating/cooling loads, daylight factors, and potential ENERGY STAR scoring.
"Autodesk's goal is to make sustainable design easier so architects can meet this growing demand, and we're doing so today by offering new sustainable design analysis software and a free online guide to building sustainably," said Phil Bernstein, Autodesk vp of AEC industry strategy and relations.
