Success Story: Vancouver, a Digital City
Vancouver, Canada is the host of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, and has been designated by Autodesk as the third pilot city of its Digital Cities initiative.
The City of Vancouver plans to use Autodesk technology to aid its sustainability efforts; interact and share information with its residents and businesses; and prepare for future development and improved public participation. The goal of this pilot program is for Vancouver to bring together 3D models of above and below ground features that integrate CAD, building information modeling, geospatial, civil engineering, and infrastructure data -- combined with realistic visualization.
A Digital City lets city government, contractors and businesses combine mapping, building, civil engineering, and utility information into an accurate city model that can be used to simulate the future impact of decisions at a city-wide scale. Autodesk previously announced two other pilot cities in its Digital Cities program, Salzburg, Austria and Incheon, Korea.

IMAGINiT's TakeAIM Client Success Story
The City of Wooster Saves Truckloads of Cash with Autodesk® Civil 3D® and IMAGINiT’s TakeAIM Implementation
The City of Wooster had a more practical reason for implementing Autodesk® Civil 3D®. They were loading various combinations of Autodesk® Land Desktop, Autodesk Map®, Autodesk® Civil Design, and Autodesk® Survey for their users, and needed to establish consistency.
They made a clear decision to migrate to Civil 3D and adopt IMAGINiT’s TakeAIM (Assured Implementation Method), a proven, repeatable process. IMAGINiT’s multi-phased implementation plan incorporated on-site training that was customized to fit their needs. "It was very beneficial having our projects integrated into the core curriculum, showing us features such as volume and surface analysis with familiar data and current scenarios," commented Joel.
As a part of the TakeAIM program, IMAGINiT went on-site and developed the initial setup of styles and templates. "By having IMAGINIT build the styles and templates, we were able to cut a lot of time out of our project development for future projects. We recommend TakeAIM to others making the transition from the Land Desktop product suite to Civil 3D," noted Joel.

Blog: Zoom To in Civil 3D
IMAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:
Did you know that you can "Zoom to" any Civil 3D object by selecting it in the Item View pane of the Prospector tab, right clicking and picking Zoom to? I thought you did.
However, did you know that when it comes to points, you can select multiple points, and then use the Zoom to option?
If you didn't know... well, now you do.

Blog: Map 3D and Civil 3D 2010 New Features
MAGINiT's Civil Blogger, Doug Benoit, shares his insight on Autodesk civil engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In this month's newsletter, Doug shares an excerpt of his blog:
Better late than never, I always say. No not really. Today's post covers many of the new features and settings found in both AutoCAD ® Map 3D 2010 and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2010.
The list of new Map features was assembled by Warren Medernach, one of IMAGINiT's Geospatial specialists. Warren is out of IMAGINiT's Saskatoon, SK, Canada office. Yours truly put together the Civil 3D list (actually, I grabbed it from the User's Guide).
So for those of you who's theme in life is to query or connect to everything that you can, check out Warren's Map 3D 2010 New Features . And for those of you just digging (get it?) to see what is new in Civil 3D, check out my C3D2010 New Features and Settings. Thanks and Enjoy!

Tip: Using the Menu Bar in 2010
(Applies to: Civil 3D 2010 and Civil 2010)
Pre-2010 versions of AutoCAD Civil 3D contained pulldown menus to access many of the available commands. Even though they are hidden in 2010, you can continue using menu bars in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010.
To do so, enter MENUBAR on the command line and set the variable to 1.
However, no new commands introduced in 2010 are contained in these menus; they are a duplicate of the menus from the 2009 version.
If you wish to use pulldown menus, Autodesk recommends that you edit them to include only customized commands.

Green Design: Mitigation Stream Design
Timmons Group's first exclusive Civil 3D project was a compensatory mitigation stream design for Magnolia Green in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Zoned for up to 4,886 residential units, this mixed-use development will significantly increase the load on the site’s existing stream channels.
To complete the environmental permitting process, Timmons Group must use natural channel design techniques to mitigate the development’s impact on the channels. By providing compensatory mitigation onsite, Timmons Group will enable the client to avoid purchasing costly mitigation banking credits.
Applying natural, or green, channel design principles, Timmons Group used Civil 3D to draw sections of the stream and create Civil 3D assemblies representing key features, such as riffles, pools, thalwegs, banks, and flood plains. From this preliminary work, designers created a realistic corridor model of the proposed stream channels.
Next, team members produced multiple what-if scenarios, analyzed the potential water flow, and changed the design accordingly, selecting options that minimized environmental impact, improved stream hydrology, and restored habitats for local flora and fauna.
During construction, the contractors will be able to load a variant of the Civil 3D model onto GPS-controlled construction equipment. Currently, the firm’s environmental services practice is on track to complete phase two of the Magnolia Green project on schedule and within budget.
