Success Story: World's Largest Telescope Housing
The world’s largest telescope is under development, and when complete in 2018, it will be housed in an astronomical observatory created by Dynamic Structures of British Columbia.
The company used Autodesk's Inventor software to design the Thirty Meter Telescope ground-based astronomical observatory housing the 14-story, 2,000-pound telescope. The core technology of TMT will be a 492-segment, 30-meter diameter primary mirror capable of providing up to 10 times the magnification power of existing ground-based telescopes.
"With Digital Prototyping, we don’t have to worry about spending thousands of dollars on physical prototypes only to find out that a part doesn't work the way we thought it would," said Craig Breckenridge, drawing office manager at Dynamic Structures. Together, the telescope and structure will have nearly 200,000 parts. www.empireds.com

IMAGINiT's TakeAIM Client Success Story
Con-Vey Keystone Inc. located in Roseburg, Oregon is a leader in the manufacturing of Custom Engineered Material Handling Solutions. They manufacture large conveyors, coolers and stacking equipment to the wood panel industry. Con-Vey supplies custom engineering and equipment for new facilities or existing production lines. IMAGINiT’s Take AIM (Assured Implementation Method), a proven repeatable process, was introduced and adopted by Con-Vey Keystone, Inc. who valued the benefits of the multi-phased plan in reducing overall impact during implementation. "As the implementation moved forward, we were very happy with IMAGINiT’s level of training and understanding of not only the technology, but our industry challenges. IMAGINiT’s Take AIM program was a tremendous help for our organization and we recommend the program to any organization transitioning to 3D technology," validated Dave Larecy

Blog: Autodesk Labs Updates
IMAGINiT's Manufacturing Solutions Blogger, Mark Flayler, shares his insight on Autodesk's manufacturing software including Inventor, Mechanical Desktop and Mechanical. In this month's newsletter, Mark shares an excerpt of his blog:
The technology preview for iCopy for Inventor is now up on the Autodesk labs website. When designs are needed that are similar but different for many components over a design frequent adjustments and file manipulations are constantly made over the course of the project.

Blog: Animating Visibility with Mental Ray
IMAGINiT's Visualization Solutions Blogger, Mark Gerhard, shares his insight on Autodesk's visualization software including 3d max, Maya, and Alias. In this month's newsletter, Mark shares an excerpt of his blog:
If you're an old 3ds Max user like me, you rely on animating the visibility of objects as part of your bag of tricks. It was a great disappointment, back in the 2008 release, when I discovered that mental ray wouldn't animate visibility. You had to animate the material opacity in order to get animated visibility affects.
In this release, its been fixed (kinda sorta). To animate the visibility of an object using mental ray do the following:
1. Turn on AutoKey.
2. Right-click on the object and choose Object Properties.
3. In the Rendering Control group, change the properties from Layer Properties to Object Properties.
4. Set a value in the Visibility spinner, then close the dialog.
5. Move the time slider to where you want the second key.
6. Again go to Object Properties and set the value for the second key, click ok.
7. You'll see the animated visibility in the viewport.
8. Add an Arch&Design Material to the object.
9. Render the sequence. It works!
If you don't have a mental ray material assigned to the object, it will work in the viewport, but not it the render. If you try to do this by creating a visibility track in the Curve Editor, it just doesn't work.
Free T-shirt to the first person who figures out how to make it work by adding a visibility track.

Tip: Multicore Support
(Applies to: Inventor 2009 and 2010)
You are using a computer with a multi-core processor and have noticed that the inventor.exe process does not use 100% of your CPU's resources. Inventor 2009 and later versions support multi-core technology in some very specific areas of the product, including:
- Animations and renderings in Studio
- Stress Analysis (ANSYS or FEAComputeServer processes)
- ASM (Autodesk Shape Manager) kernel
- Task Scheduler
To fully benefit from multi-core processors, you need to use multi-threaded software. Unfortunately, Inventor is currently a single-threaded application. Due to the lack of multi-threading, Inventor is not capable of using more than 50% of each CPU on a dual-core computer (or 25% of a four-core one, and so on), so there is no significant performance gain over a single CPU computer.
The only way to take advantage of a dual-core processor when using Inventor is to run multiple Inventor sessions on your computer.
Starting in Inventor 2009, you can, however, use multiple processes in Task Scheduler by clicking Settings menu > Multiple Processes. The number of processes you can use is not limited to the number of processors available. If desired, you can increase the number of processes until 100% CPU activity is achieved on all of the processors.

Green Design: Green Ocean Energy
Green Ocean Energy of Aberdeen, Scotland uses Autodesk's Inventor software to develop Ocean Treader and Wave Treader, both floating devices that convert the wave motion into energy. Ocean Treader is meant to be moored one to two miles offshore in open water, while Wave Treader is mounted on offshore structures, such as oil rigs.
Both work on the same principle: waves makes the Treader's floating arms rise and fall, converting the motion to electricity. The primary challenge was to build devices that could withstand the rough waters of the North Atlantic, where wave heights can be as much as 30 feet during winter storms.
"Fortunately, Inventor is more than just design software; it's an analysis tool too," reports George Smith, managing director at Green Ocean. "Inventor allows us to validate our designs on the computer before there's any investment made in constructing a physical prototype."
The company has proved its concept through indoor wave-pool testing, and is now raising funds to develop a full-size prototype to start offshore testing in 2011. www.greenoceanenergy.com
