Free Event: Resolving The Municipal & Utility Infrastructure As-built Backlog

Fri, 28 Aug 2009 09:39:28 EDT | Permalink

MichaelSchlosser3 (10K) Managing municipal and utility infrastructure requires reliable information for design, field, management and regulatory purposes.

An up-to-date inventory of above and below ground infrastructure is a key element of an infrastructure management system and crucial to sound decision making. However, a major obstacle in achieving data currency is the delay between construction and when corresponding construction data, known as as-builts, are actually entered into the records database. This delay and resulting backlog of as-built information can stretch from several months to years with a corresponding records database that is always out-of-date.

Join IMAGINiT Technologies for an informative session hosted by Mike Schlosser of Autodesk to learn more about the As-Built problem and how it can be addressed. Events are currently scheduled in Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax.

Autodesk Names Ponderosa Autodesk Inventor Of The Month

Mon, 02 Feb 2009 01:16:14 EST | Permalink
Ponderosa Roasting (Ponderosa), a specialty manufacturer of coffee roasting machines, has been named as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for January 2009.

Ponderosa used Autodesk Inventor software to design and manufacture coffee roasting machines that give greater control over various aspects of the roasting process, ensuring that each coffee bean is optimally roasted.

Using Digital Prototyping to create an accurate 3D model with Inventor has already helped Ponderosa significantly streamline its design-to-manufacturing process. Ponderosa recently developed a custom, 15kg roaster in just four weeks–a process that previously would have taken nearly six months.

"Nobody in the industry can provide the dynamics that we can with our roasters," said Boyd Guildner, Co-founder and President of Ponderosa.

"We wouldn't have been able to create such an advanced roaster without Inventor. Inventor allowed us to think outside the box and explore multiple roaster designs before cutting a single piece of metal."

Autodesk names Elmarco Ltd. Inventor of the Month for November 2008

    Wed, 26 Nov 2008 03:45:12 EST | Permalink

Elmarco relied on Autodesk Inventor software to develop its Nanospider line of machines, which make the production of nanofiber textiles possible on an industrial scale. Nanofiber textiles are highly breathable but have pore sizes that are small enough to prevent micro particles, bacteria or even viruses from passing through, making it ideal for air filtration systems in medical settings or in chip fabrication plants.

The Inventor of the Month program recognizes the most innovative design and engineering advancements made by the extensive community using Autodesk Inventor software--the foundation of the Autodesk solution for Digital Prototyping. A digital prototype allows users to design, visualize and simulate a product before it is built, reducing the reliance on constructing multiple physical prototypes.

"Inventor of the Month Elmarco is the first--and only--company in the world to offer customers machines for the industrial production of nanofibers," said Robert "Buzz" Kross, senior vice president of Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions. "Inventor has helped Elmarco unleash its innovation in the nanofiber industry."

Many times smaller than a human hair, nanofibers have a diameter of 200 to 500 billionths of a meter. The Nanospider machine produces these nanofibers through a patented electrospinning process, in which a rotating drum is partially submerged in a polymer solution and placed in a high-intensity electrostatic field. The resulting nanofibers are highly desirable for filtration and acoustic applications.

Autodesk Inventor played a key role in helping Elmarco simplify the concept-to-manufacturing process of the Nanospider machines that mass-produce these nanofibers. The 12-member Elmarco design team uses Inventor to create 3D models of the spinning units and the overall machine body that it can easily share with other members of the organization, or reuse for later designs

Autodesk Announces Incheon, Korea as Second City of its Digital Cities Initiative

    Thu, 13 Nov 2008 01:54:25 EST | Permalink
    Untitled Document

Company Working with IFEZ and IUDC to Build First Asian Digital City

Autodesk has announced it is working with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) and the Incheon Urban Development Corporation (IUDC) to cooperate in the creation of Asia's first Digital City for Incheon, Korea -- the 'Tomorrow City' in Song-do City. Autodesk has designated Incheon as the second pilot city of its Digital City initiative, after announcing Salzburg, Austria in July.

Autodesk, IFEZ, and IUDC will work together to develop a Digital City -- a collaborative environment created around a detailed 3D city model that allows users from the public, city government, construction and business communities to leverage technology solutions so they can visualize, analyze and simulate real-world city scenarios to improve decision making and provide a common environment for sharing information. The objective of today's announcement is to help the Tomorrow City research a state-of-the-art city management system.

Another goal of this pilot program is for Incheon to be able to bring together 3D models of above and below ground features in an open technology platform that supports the secure and robust integration of CAD, building information modeling (BIM), geospatial, civil engineering, and infrastructure data over a wide geographic area. By combining that data with Autodesk's realistic visualization and simulation tools, the city of Incheon would deliver an intuitive and compelling way for its citizens to experience and understand the design and management of a city's construction, environment and traffic.

The IFEZ and the IUDC will collaborate with Autodesk to explore the full potential of U-GIS (ubiquitous GIS), possibly one of the most advanced applications of ubiquitous technology in the world. At the same time, the parties expect that the Digital City project will help promote Incheon City as a leading 'u-city' (a city of ubiquitous information technology). The Korean government's u-cities initiative aims to establish a repeatable way to plan, build, and manage large urban development projects that incorporate innovative technology and design. Incheon City can serve as a future model for subsequent urban development programs in Korea and abroad.

Autodesk and the IUDC have worked together for many years, and Autodesk's acknowledged expertise and credibility in engineering, data sets and visualization technologies will provide Incheon with an in-depth understanding of how to visualize design at a city-wide scale.

As the 3D city modeling can be used to make better informed decisions based on real data, the IFEZ will be able to communicate those decisions and options to a wide range of stakeholders. Moreover, the city government can minimize impact of the development projects over millions of its citizens and provide better administrative services to them, as the collaborative environment created around a detailed 3D model can allow IFEZ to simulate and understand the impact of plans and proposals throughout the planning and development process.

Bentley Motors Limited is the latest prestige car manufacturer to choose Autodesk software. The world-renowned firm, famous for its engineering and craftsmanship, has licensed Autodesk Showcase Professional software and predicts that it will almost halve the time required to create digital prototypes.

Jeff King, Digital Data manager at Bentley, said that he was looking for a software application that would enable concept designers to create images of the highest quality for faster and more informed decision making. "Being able to create accurate, realistic rendered images in this way gives us the opportunity to review designs and test the market at an earlier stage without physical prototypes," he said. "We are constantly looking at ways to make this process more efficient, and we believe that Showcase will help us streamline workflow while still offering the best visual experience possible."

"Increasingly, car manufacturers are recognizing the benefits of being able to offer design options that accurately reflect lifelike materials, lighting and environments at the concept stage," said Manish Amlani of Autodesk reseller Majenta Solutions UK, who secured the deal with Bentley. "Showcase enables users to do this and then review concepts in real time, so customers can make key decisions efficiently and economically."

Autodesk Showcase visualization software, part of the Autodesk Solution for Digital Prototyping, creates accurate, realistic imagery from 3D CAD data to enable interactive, real-time design reviews in the highest visual quality.

Autodesk Names Genmar Yacht Group as Inventor of the Month for September 2008

    Thu, 09 Oct 2008 20:02:06 EDT | Permalink

Genmar Yacht Group, which manufactures luxury yachts under the Carver and Marquis brand names, used Autodesk Inventor software to design its new Marquis 420 Sport Coupe, which was recognized as the best new yacht in its class at the 2008 Miami International Boat Show.

The Inventor of the Month program recognizes the most innovative design and engineering advancements made by the extensive community using Autodesk Inventor software -- the foundation of the Autodesk solution for Digital Prototyping. A digital prototype is a realistic 3D digital simulation of the entire end product, used to virtually optimize and validate a product before it is built to reduce the necessity of constructing physical prototypes.

"Inventor allows us to check for potential incompatibility among different parts and components, and resolve any problems in the design before it reaches the manufacturing floor," said Michael Krahn, information systems manager at Genmar Yacht Group. "That capability saves us time and money, helping us maintain our leading position in an increasingly competitive market for luxury yachts."

Autodesk Maya Software Serves as Animation Platform for New Star Wars: The Clone Wars Animated Feature Film and TV Series

    Fri, 19 Sep 2008 02:40:14 EDT | Permalink
Lucasfilm Ltd. and Lucasfilm Animation are using Autodesk Maya software to create the upcoming television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, just as they did to create the feature-length animated film that is now in theaters. These are the first animated Star Wars projects from Lucasfilm. The projects benefited from a global production environment, with Maya as the hub for creating highly detailed worlds, characters and creatures, including Anakin Skywalker, R2-D2, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jabba the Hutt. Lucasfilm Chief Technology Officer Richard Kerris said, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars brings an entirely new look and feel to Star Wars by moving it into animation. We wanted to use technology that would live up to the high standards of Lucasfilm, and selected Autodesk Maya as our animation platform for both the film and TV series. We chose Maya for its creative tools, extensibility and large user base. Maya is the backbone of our global production environment, enabling us to seamlessly share work between our United States-based creative team and our production studios in Asia." Digital artists in California, at Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and at partner studio CGCG in Taipei, have created more than 30 episodes of the TV series. The California-based creative team at Lucasfilm Animation establishes the storyline and key scenes, while animators at the studios in Asia produce the animation. This around-the-clock production chain generates an average of eight finished minutes of animation each week -- an unprecedented productivity level for film and TV production. Kerris added, "Maya has become the animation platform of choice for the film industry. It greatly reduces the complexity of working globally. At Lucasfilm, we're constantly developing new tools, and we fit them into Maya. In essence, Maya is the concrete foundation that lets us explore new concepts and maximize productivity and creativity -- without disrupting our global production pipeline." "Ultimately, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is about great storytelling," said Danny Keller, animation supervisor at Lucasfilm. "From a technological standpoint, we need to be flexible in order to take the creative vision wherever George Lucas and supervising director Dave Filoni dream of taking it. Autodesk Maya allows us to do that."

Autodesk Names British Antarctic Survey as Inventor of the Month for July 2008

    Wed, 13 Aug 2008 00:51:38 EDT | Permalink

Autodesk announced that British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has been named as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for July 2008. Responsible for the United Kingdom's national scientific activities in Antarctica, BAS uses Autodesk Inventor software to design crucial tools that allow the organization to more effectively carry out research and provide insight into key 21st century challenges such as climate change, ozone depletion and rising sea levels.

The Inventor of the Month program recognizes the most innovative design and engineering advancements made by the extensive community using the Autodesk Inventor software -- the foundation of the Autodesk solution for Digital Prototyping. A digital prototype is a realistic 3D digital simulation used to virtually optimize and validate a product before it is built, reducing the need for physical prototypes.

The Antarctic region is an important regulator and indicator of global climate. Scientists know that the Antarctic ice sheet has grown and shrunk over geological history, and recent analysis of Antarctic ice cores reveals that during the last 800,000 years, the Earth experienced eight glacial cycles, each with an ice age and warm period. Understanding this natural rhythm helps scientists get a better picture of what's happening to the Earth's climate today and what might happen in the future.

The BAS engineering team relies on products in the Autodesk Inventor product line to create these sophisticated scientific instruments. By generating models that are accurate 3D digital representations of the finished product, BAS engineers are able to validate design and engineering data as they work. This approach minimizes the need for physical prototypes and helps to reduce the number of costly engineering changes that might otherwise emerge after the design has been sent to manufacturing.

"Autodesk Inventor has proved invaluable in checking for interferences and making sure all the components fit together," said Andy Tait, a mechanical design engineer at BAS. "Just as important, it allows us to present very realistic 3D models to the scientists so that we can gather their input on the device before we actually produce a model. Sometimes it could be something simple, like the device being the wrong size to handle when wearing gloves, or that the device needs to be more modular and easier to assemble and take apart in icy conditions."

By using Inventor in this way, Tait estimates that the organization has been able to reduce the amount of time needed to finalize a piece of equipment by 40 percent. Since there are few opportunities to get ships in and out of Antarctica, speed is essential. For BAS, Digital Prototyping can mean the difference between getting a piece of equipment to the Antarctic on time versus missing the window of opportunity for what could be up to a year.

3Dconnexion Survey Touts 3-D Mice Productivity Gains

    Thu, 07 Aug 2008 19:38:19 EDT | Permalink

A recent article published in Design News by Beth Stackpole discussed research done by 3DConnexion showing the productivity gains when using 3D mice. The survey, conduced by independent market researcher MarketLab, polled 190 3Dconnexion mice users, garnering feedback on a variety of issues regarding their experience with 3-D mice when using leading CAD applications like Autodesk Inventor.

More than 80% of respondents said that using a 3-D mouse increased their productivity, most noting an increase within the first week of using their 3-D mouse. In addition, almost half of the respondents said their overall productivity increased by 20% or more. More than 80% reported that using a 3-D mouse made it easier to identify problems associated with a design. The other big win for 3-D mouse users: More than 70% of those surveyed said their 3-D mouse reduced discomfort when navigating designs, allowing for longer design sessions.

Unlike traditional mice, 3-D mice let design engineers move in all three dimensions simultaneously, using six degrees of freedom. Users gently lift, press and turn the controller cap to pan, zoom and rotate without stopping to select commands.

The findings from the survey can be found in the white paper "The Economic Payback of 3D Mice for CAD Design Engineers." Read it here
