RAND Completes Acquisition Of Taylor Technologies, Inc.
RAND Worldwide announced on April 7, 2006 it has completed the acquisition of certain Autodesk-related assets from Taylor Technologies, Inc. ("TTI"). TTI is a technology integrator with over 18 years of experience in engineering and architectural technology. They specialize in the sales of Autodesk software, engineering consulting services and training.
With this acquisition "It enhances our penetration within the Architectural and Civil markets, expands the geographical reach of our Autodesk services throughout the Midwest, fortifies our position as the largest third-party vendor of Autodesk software and related services worldwide," said Frank Baldesarra, President and CEO of RAND Worldwide.

A new white paper titled "Autodesk DWF: Opening the Door for Global Engineering Development Collaboration" is based on research conducted by the analyst firm IDC. It shows that the DWF design review process lowers the cost of managing and sharing 2D and 3D design data.

Revit Building 9 Certified For IFC
Autodesk Revit Building 9 architectural design software has been certified for exporting IFC data (Industry Foundation Classes) by the Industry Alliance for Interoperability.
The certification includes IFC2x2 Code Checking View and IFC 2x2 Coordination View certifications. In addition, Revit's Integrated Plan Checking Systems from Singapore's Building and Construction Authority will enable compliance with U.S. General Services Administration IFC delivery requirements.

Vault Error When Checking In Files
Applies to Autodesk Inventor 10 and Autodesk Vault 4
When you check in a file with the 'Keep Checked Out' option selected, you may receive several error messages, including:
- Error Getting Relative Resource Path
- Error 111.
To correct this problem, download a hotfix from usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=DL6638032
To install the hotfix:
- Download and save the hotfix to a location on the Vault server.
- Log into Vault Manager.
- On the File menu, stop the web service.
- Double-click the hotfix and it will update the Connectivity.Document.Services.dll file.
- Restart the Web Service (using Vault Manager).
To confirm that the hotfix was installed successfully, locate the Connectivity.Document.Services.dll file, located in the C:\Program Fles\Autodesk\Data Management Server 4\Server\Web\Services\bin directory (for default installations). If the hotfix was applied successfully, the version of the patched file should read 10.2.4.1.
Error 1935 with HRESULT 0x80070002
Applies to AutoCAD 2006-2007 and Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007
When you install the .NET Framework, the installation might crash with a "1935 error and the HRESULT value was 0x80070002."
HRESULT means that the specified file cannot be found, and can be caused by a certain type of adware running on the machine. To determine whether you have this adware installed:
- Open the Windows Task Manager and look at the Processes tab.
- Look for a process named wtoolsa.exe, you have adware installed on your computer.
- Remove this adware using a removal tool before you install the .NET Framework.
Once the adware has been removed, try reinstalling the .NET Framework on your system. It is strongly recommended that you uninstall any existing versions of the .NET Framework and any related hotfixes before you reinstall the .NET Framework.
PLT-to-DWG Conversion Error
Applies to AutoCAD 2000 - 2007
When you convert a PLT file using the Convert PLT to DWG Express Tool, the following error message is sometimes displayed:
- The selected file is not the proper HP-GL format
The tool works with standard HP-GL files only; HP-GL/2 and other plotter formats are not supported. PLT files created with either the DraftPro DXL/EXL series ADI 4.2 drivers or system printer drivers are also not supported.

Engineering Curriculum Needs To Be More Hands-On
Gone are the days when school involved teaching by using only a textbook and a blackboard. Today, engineering students spend a lot of time learning computer-aided software. However, when it comes to learning theoretical concepts, students are having difficulty.
In the article Gaming the Curriculum by Phillip Wankat and Frank Oreovicz, they state “Engineering professors may need to add games that teach fundamentals to their teaching repertoire”. By teaching lessons through video games with little formal instructions, they suggest this will help students learn more efficiently since many students are gamers.
Gamers often skip video game instructions because trial and error is much faster. By integrating this methodology into the curriculum, students will go through the same trial and error approach to help understand the fundamentals of engineering.
